Our October Travelers Are Discovering the Stories, Traditions, and People Behind the Silk Road

Our October Travelers Are Discovering the Stories, Traditions, and People Behind the Silk Road

From Khiva’s tiled courtyards to Bukhara’s bazaars and family homes, October is bringing Uzbekistan to life, and I am sharing it with you as it happens.

Over three decades of welcoming travelers to my homeland, I have learned to recognize a particular look. It appears the first time someone steps into a Khiva courtyard at dusk, or tastes plov in a home where it has been cooked the same way for generations. It is part wonder, part curiosity, and part quiet surprise that a place can feel so ancient and so warm at the same time.

This October, I am seeing that look every day.

Our travelers are moving through Uzbekistan right now, and their journey is still unfolding. I simply could not wait until they returned home to share it with you.

Bukhara and Khiva: Where Every Street Has a Story

You can photograph a madrasa. You can admire brickwork laid centuries ago. But a monument only truly opens up when someone tells you who built it, who studied there, and who traded in its shadow.

That is the gift Abdulaziz, one of our guides, gives our groups. He does not simply point out landmarks; he connects them to the scholars, rulers, merchants, and craftsmen who shaped this crossroads of civilizations.

Among the carved wooden columns of Khiva’s Juma Mosque, every pillar has its own story.

Inside Khiva’s Juma Mosque, a forest of carved wooden pillars rises in soft light. Our group did what every good group does: they stopped, looked up, and started asking questions. Why is each column different? Who carved them, and when? Abdulaziz had an answer, and a story, for every one.

Then, as evening settles over Itchan Kala, the walled city transforms. The heat leaves the walls, lanterns glow against golden brick, and the great carved doors seem to guard centuries of secrets. In our travelers’ faces you can see the moment Khiva stops being a place they are visiting and becomes a place they are beginning to understand.

Traveling With Me: An Insider’s Uzbekistan

For me, Bukhara is not a destination. It is home. I was born and raised here, and every lane of the old city holds a memory: a teacher, a neighbor, a family celebration, a favorite corner for tea.

This month I am personally accompanying some of our special guests, and these are the days I treasure most. Beneath Bukhara’s old trading domes, I can show them where jewelers, hat makers, and money changers once worked. But the doors I love opening most are not the ones in guidebooks. They are the doors of people’s homes.

Stepping through the gates of a local family home.

In Uzbekistan, the gate of a home is a threshold of honor. Our hosts were waiting there to greet each traveler, and from the first moment the visit felt less like a tour and more like being welcomed into a family.

With our hosts at their gates, ready to welcome the group.
Old friends and new: sharing a happy moment with one of our guests.

For the occasion I wore atlas, our shimmering hand-dyed ikat silk. Its bold patterns have been woven in the Fergana Valley for generations, and guests always want to know how those colors are made. It is the perfect beginning for a conversation about who we are.

The most memorable journeys are not measured by how many places you see, but by how much more you understand by the time you leave.

Beyond the Monuments: A Living Culture

Uzbekistan is not a museum frozen in time. Its culture lives in kitchens and workshops, in music and craftsmanship, and in the generous rituals of everyday life.

Inside, I shared with our travelers how hospitality shapes Uzbek family life: why the guest is always seated in the place of honor, why tea is poured just a little at a time, and why no one leaves a table hungry. They listened, asked wonderful questions, and soon the room was full of laughter.

And then, as always in an Uzbek home, the table began to fill. Our hostess appeared with platters of fresh fruit, pomegranates, grapes, and the sweetest fruits of the Uzbek autumn, followed by tea, warm bread, and dishes prepared with love.

Autumn’s harvest, served with a smile.

The Moments That Make a Journey Personal

Some of my favorite photographs from this month were never planned: a group gathered in the shade of an old tree, listening intently; a spontaneous laugh; someone stepping back to take in the whole view.

Under the trees, a monument becomes a story worth gathering around.

Every group develops its own rhythm. Strangers become companions. The unfamiliar begins to feel approachable, and history becomes vivid. Photographs stop being records of places and become reminders of experiences lived.

October Is Still Unfolding

Our travelers are still here, with more cities to explore, more flavors to taste, and more stories to hear. I will share more as their journey continues.

You can admire Uzbekistan in pictures and read about the Silk Road in books. But nothing replaces standing in these places yourself and hearing their stories from people who know them from the inside.
