Nine Countries, Endless Experiences

Nine Countries, Endless Experiences

Discovering the heart of the Silk Road through the people, traditions, and landscapes of Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Türkiye.

When I talk with travelers about Central Asia and the Caucasus, I often tell them that the most memorable moments are rarely the ones you simply photograph. They are the moments when you sit down with a family, learn something with your own hands, taste something prepared in front of you, ride through a landscape that seems endless, or hear a story directly from someone whose family has lived there for generations.

That is what makes Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Türkiye so special. Each country has its own personality, landscape, traditions, and rhythm of life, yet together they create one of the most fascinating travel experiences in the world. Here are some of the immersive activities I love introducing to travelers.

Traditional Uzbek wood carving, a centuries-old art passed down through generations

Uzbekistan

Cook, Create, Taste, and Connect

Uzbekistan is the country where I always encourage travelers to slow down and participate. Of course, you will want to see Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, and Tashkent, but I believe the real magic begins when you step behind the monuments and into everyday life. Join a local family to learn how to prepare traditional Uzbek plov, make fresh bread in a tandoor, or prepare dishes such as manti and somsa.

In Khiva, travelers can experience traditional craft workshops, including wood carving, silk carpet weaving, and other local arts. In Margilan, you can discover the fascinating world of silk production, while in Rishtan you can meet ceramic masters and see the distinctive blue and turquoise pottery for which the city is famous.

Markets are another experience I never want my guests to miss. Walk through Chorsu or Siyob Bazaar, taste dried fruits and nuts, smell the spices, talk with vendors, and watch the daily rhythm of the city unfold around you. These are not performances created for tourists. They are traditions that continue to be part of everyday Uzbek life.

Horseback riding through the valleys of the Tian Shan mountains, Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan

Ride Like a Nomad and Sleep Under the Stars

Kyrgyzstan is where I take travelers when they want to feel the extraordinary freedom of the mountains. One of the most memorable experiences is horseback riding across the high pastures, especially around Song Kul, where the landscape opens into enormous green valleys surrounded by the Tian Shan mountains. You can spend the night in a traditional yurt, share a meal with a local family, drink kumys, and wake up to horses moving across the jailoo.

A visit with a Kyrgyz eagle hunter is another unforgettable experience. In villages such as Kochkor, travelers can learn about felt making and the creation of traditional shyrdak carpets. For more adventurous guests, Kyrgyzstan offers trekking, mountain hiking, and multi-day journeys through some of Central Asia’s most spectacular landscapes. What I love most is that these activities do not separate you from the culture. You experience the mountains through the traditions of the people who have lived with them for generations.

The colorful Ascension Cathedral in Almaty’s Panfilov Park, Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan

Discover the Spirit of the Great Steppe

Kazakhstan offers travelers an entirely different scale. It is a country of enormous open landscapes, mountains, lakes, deserts, and steppe, and some of my favorite experiences here are connected to its nomadic heritage. Travelers can stay in traditional yurts, taste kumys and other Kazakh specialties, and learn about the customs that developed from life on the steppe.

Horseback riding is a wonderful way to experience the landscape because horses have always been central to Kazakh culture. Eagle hunting offers an extraordinary opportunity to learn about the ancient bond between Kazakh hunters and golden eagles. Around Almaty and in the mountain regions, you can hike, trek, ski, cycle, raft, or explore dramatic landscapes such as the Singing Dune in Altyn Emel National Park. Kazakhstan is a place where I encourage travelers to leave plenty of space in their itinerary because sometimes the most beautiful experience is simply being surrounded by the vastness of the steppe.

Tajikistan

Walk Into the Mountains and Into Local Life

Tajikistan is a country I recommend especially to travelers who want adventure combined with genuine human connection. The Pamir Mountains and the Fan Mountains offer extraordinary opportunities for hiking and trekking, but what makes the experience special is what happens between the trails. You can stay in local homestays, share meals with families, meet Pamiri communities, and learn about life in some of the most remote parts of Central Asia.

Along the Pamir Highway, the journey itself becomes an activity. Travelers follow the Panj River through dramatic valleys, visit ancient archaeological sites, explore traditional villages, and experience the remarkable landscapes of the Wakhan and Pamir regions. There are also opportunities to relax in natural hot springs such as Garm Chashma. For me, Tajikistan is about walking, listening, meeting people, drinking tea in a family home, and allowing the mountains to become part of the journey.

Turkmenistan

Meet the Culture of Horses, Carpets, and the Desert

Turkmenistan offers some of the most distinctive cultural experiences in Central Asia. One of the country’s most important cultural symbols is the Akhal Teke horse, famous for its beauty, speed, and long association with Turkmen identity. Travelers can learn about these magnificent horses and the deep traditions surrounding them.

Carpet weaving is deeply connected to the country’s cultural heritage, and visitors can learn about the patterns, techniques, and craftsmanship behind these remarkable textiles. A journey toward the Darvaza area introduces travelers to the dramatic landscape of the Karakum Desert and the extraordinary feeling of spending time far from major cities. These experiences help reveal a side of Turkmenistan that cannot be understood simply by visiting Ashgabat’s monumental architecture.

Georgia

Taste, Create, and Connect

Georgia is a country I love introducing through its food, wine, villages, and wonderful hospitality. I especially enjoy taking travelers to family wineries in Kakheti, where they can taste traditional wines, share a meal, or learn how Georgian dishes such as khachapuri and khinkali are prepared. Meeting local artisans and exploring traditional crafts adds another personal dimension to the journey. For travelers who enjoy adventure, the Caucasus Mountains offer beautiful opportunities for hiking and horseback riding. You arrive as a traveler, but very quickly you can feel like a welcomed guest.

Armenia

Discover Traditions and Local Life

Armenia is a country where history and everyday life are beautifully connected. I encourage travelers to look beyond the ancient monasteries and discover the people and traditions behind them. You can meet carpet and textile artisans, learn to bake traditional lavash, visit local vineyards, and share meals with Armenian families. The mountains also offer wonderful opportunities for hiking and horseback riding. Armenia’s ancient traditions are not simply preserved in museums. They continue to live through families, artisans, food, and daily life.

The iconic Flame Towers of Baku, where ancient Silk Road heritage meets modern ambition

Azerbaijan

Experience Silk Road Culture

Azerbaijan offers an incredible combination of Silk Road heritage, craftsmanship, landscapes, and cuisine. I love introducing travelers to its carpet and textile traditions, artisan workshops, and historic communities such as Sheki and Lahij. You can meet craftspeople, explore local markets, enjoy traditional meals, and discover the country’s fascinating connection to silk and carpet making. Beyond the cities, places such as Gobustan, the Caspian coast, and the fire temples reveal a very different side of Azerbaijan. It is a country of wonderful contrasts, where ancient traditions and modern life exist side by side.

The majestic Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Türkiye, where centuries of history meet at the crossroads of continents

Türkiye

Taste, Explore, and Experience

Türkiye is a destination I always encourage travelers to experience through more than its famous landmarks. In Istanbul, I love taking travelers into local markets and neighborhoods to discover Turkish food, coffee, sweets, and everyday life. Istanbul is also an important gateway to Central Asia, with Turkish Airlines offering convenient connections from Türkiye to all eight countries across Central Asia and the Caucasus, making it an ideal starting point for travelers who want to explore the wider region. In Cappadocia, staying in a cave hotel, exploring the valleys, and watching the sunrise from a hot air balloon can create truly unforgettable memories. Travelers can also enjoy hiking, horseback riding, cooking experiences, coastal journeys, and remarkable archaeological sites such as Ephesus and Pamukkale. What makes Türkiye special to me is the way history, culture, food, and hospitality come together at every turn.

Why These Experiences Matter

When I design journeys across Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Türkiye, I do not want travelers to return home with only a collection of photographs. I want them to remember the hands of the artisan who showed them how a piece of silk is made, the taste of bread they helped prepare, the sound of horses outside a mountain yurt, the family who welcomed them for tea, the craftsperson who shared the story behind a traditional textile, or the feeling of standing in an enormous landscape with nothing but mountains and sky around them.

These nine countries offer completely different experiences, but they share one beautiful quality. They invite you to participate. In Uzbekistan, you can cook, create, taste, and meet artisans. In Kyrgyzstan, you can ride into the mountains and experience nomadic hospitality. In Kazakhstan, you can discover the traditions of the Great Steppe. In Tajikistan, you can walk through the Pamirs and experience village life. In Turkmenistan, you can discover the traditions of Akhal Teke horses, carpets, and the vast Karakum Desert.

In Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, you can experience centuries-old traditions through food, wine, music, textiles, handicrafts, village life, and warm family hospitality. In Türkiye, history, culture, food, and hospitality come together at every turn.

This is how I believe these regions should be experienced. Not simply as countries to check off a map, but as places where you can slow down, participate, listen, and connect. And when you travel this way, the Silk Road stops being something you only read about in history books.

You become part of the story.
